Not my will but God's
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
(Matthew 26:39, NIV)
This morning I finished my reading of the book of Matthew. The first book of the New Testament ends by telling the story of Jesus' death and resurrection. Just after the Last Supper and just prior to being arrested, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed to God. Matthew 26:39 (NIV) states that Jesus said during the course of that prayer, "Yet not as I will but as you will." This statement has always served as a powerful reminder to me of the need to set aside what we may want and to focus on discerning (and then following) God's will for our lives. This statement has stuck with me as I walk through this life. My goal is to turn over all important situations to God; seeking His will, rather than mine, for my life.
My family and I am embarking on a season of change. All that I can hope for is that I am doing God's will and not my own. I go forward confident that through prayer and time with God we have come to the right decision. But, I will be checking in with Him all along the way, just to make sure.
